GroupMe – Free Texting For Your Group

by Greg Cross 6 Comments

I came across what seems like a promising texting and conference calling solution for groups called GroupMe.

According to their own marketing GroupMe is group texting and conference calling. It’s like a private chat room over SMS, or reply-all text messaging. GroupMe enables you to organize and communicate with the groups of people in your life that are important to you.

Set up unique groups to text message or conference call. Each group is given a unique phone number. When you send a text message to a GroupMe number, the message is sent instantly to everyone in the group. When you call it, GroupMe automatically connects all group members on a conference call. Because it’s a unique phone number, you can save it to your contacts and you’ll never forget who you’re talking to.

GroupMe is totally free since I have been using it. Now they may go a premium model at some point and charge a small user fee, but for now it is free. I love it!

Here’s how I have used it so far.

I coach my 10 year old daughter’s soccer team and use GroupMe to text the parents about practice reminders and other pertinent information that they may need. I like it because with one text message I can reach ALL of my soccer parents. Email does not always work effectively, because the parents may not be in front of their email at the time when I send the text.

If a parent replies to my message, then that message goes out to everyone in the “group”. Likewise, a parent can initiate a text that will go out to all of the parents. For example, if a parent was unable to get their child to practice, then they could text the “group” requesting if another parent could pick their kid up and take them to practice. How cool is that?

The thing to keep in mind is that only 25 people or cell phone numbers can be on a specific group. The implications for this App are amazing. A small business who wants to create a “group” for it’s employees. A church staff team, a little league baseball team, nonprofit boards and their staff … and the list goes on.

The other cool thing is that each group that you setup (and you can setup unlimited groups) is assigned a unique phone number. This means that you can then call that number and everyone on the list is called and invited to the conference call.  Pretty neato mosquito don’t ya think?

Lastly, they have Apps for Android and iPhone. I have an Android and the App is very, very slick. Very easy to use and navigate.

I like this concept and I plan to implement it with other groups that I work with. Thanks GroupMe Team for developing a great solution.

If you are currently using  GroupMe I’d love to hear how you are using it with your group.

Greg, sounds promising. Is it all free? Or are there limits on the free version with paid upgrades? I hope you’ll blog about your experience with GroupMe.

Testimonials

avatarI would like to offer my endorsement of Greg Cross, owner of Cross Creative Marketing, as a speaker for your organization or event.

I have had the privilege of hearing Greg make presentations to large and small groups on the subjects of marketing, social media, the importance of branding and web site design.  Greg delivered a very engaging presentation to over 100 Chamber of Commerce members at a luncheon on the topic of Networking.

avatarI began working for the New Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce in September, 2010. Greg had created the website for the Chamber prior to me being hired. When I started, Greg offered to help me get started and show me a few things so that I could keep our website up to date. I keep coming back to him for guidance because he is always teaching me new things to do and ways to keep my website fresh and interesting. Currently, I participate in the monthly support group that Greg has for the Stratum website users. This has been extremely helpful for me because I can bring my questions to Greg & know that I will get clear instructions on how to accomplish what I want to create. He does a great job of explaining what I need to do when I'm working on my website on my own.
